Who is a Candidate for Invisalign®?
You may have heard about Invisalign®, the system for correcting teeth without the need for braces, wires or metal brackets. It may appeal to you, but you may not know that not everyone is an ideal candidate for Invisalign. At Kulkarni & Fitz Orthodontics in Mason, OH, we offer an array of solutions for patients who need their bite corrected or their teeth straightened. As your preferred orthodontist in Mason, OH we are more than happy to consult with you to determine if you are a good candidate for Invisalign, or another solution.
An orthodontist must always assess a patient to determine the level of correction needed. Having a good bite is a wonderful and strong foundation for oral health, in addition to giving you a nice and straight smile to show off to the world. However, if you need moderate to significant correction, the clear aligners that are used in the Invisalign approach may not be strong enough for your actual needs.
In such instances, we might recommend metal or clear braces because of their greater strength and effectiveness in overcoming more severe misalignment. The clear aligners are an ideal answer for the patient with mild to moderate gaps between the teeth, mild to moderate misalignment and less substantial need for adjustment.
Is this all that would make someone a good candidate for Invisalign? No, it is also a good solution if you are an adult who needs some correction, but who does not want to rely on wires and brackets. Most adults would prefer to keep their orthodontic appliances much more discreet and covert. If this sounds similar to your wishes, and you also have only mild to moderate needs, then you are a likely candidate for Invisalign.
You are also a good candidate for Invisalign if you are not in a very big hurry to get the work done. At the least, it takes around six months for the aligners to do their work. Many patients wear them for longer than that, and some may need up to two years before the adjustments are complete. Additionally, this is not designed for children, and it is teens and adults who qualify.
Lastly, if budgetary concerns will play a key role in your decision making process, you may not be a good candidate for clear aligners. Traditional metal braces are the most affordable treatment, and may allow you greater control on the costs.
