What to Do with a Poking Wire

what to do with a poking wireAt Kulkarni & Fitz Orthodontics in Dayton, OH, we understand that no one is happy having their mouth filled with metal, at least until they get used to the feeling and start thinking about the benefit of having healthier, straighter teeth later on. Most of our patients find that within about a month, they do not even really notice their braces all that much. Sometimes, though a poking wire can serve as a reminder.

What to Do About a Poking Wire

Loose wires are the most common problem for people who wear braces. Fortunately, most of the time you can actually fix a poking wire yourself. So, if a wire comes loose, but is not entirely dislodged, just move it gently back into the bracket or tube. You can also carefully use tweezers, or the eraser end of a pencil to coax the wire back into position.

If none of these methods solve the problem of the poking wire, try to curve it in such a way that it is resting against your teeth or gums. Then give our office a call so that you can come in and have us fix the poking wire for you. In the meantime, if you are experiencing discomfort, use the dental wax that we gave you to cushion the sharp end.

If you are not confident that you can fix the problem yourself, don’t risk causing further damage. We are available to help you with any issues you may have with your braces, so if the problem looks like it’s a bit too complex to handle on your own, or it is causing you pain, you can rely on us at Kulkarni & Fitz Orthodontics.
