How Long Does Orthodontic Treatment Take?

How Long Does Orthodontic Treatment Take?

To properly answer the question posed in the title, it is important to take one major issue into consideration – the patient. At Kulkarni & Fitz Orthodontics in Centerville, OH we are often asked how long an orthodontic treatment takes, but there really is no standard answer or even an “average” that adequately applies.

What we can say, as your preferred orthodontist in Centerville, OH, is that the figure we give you is going to be determined by the issues we are seeking to address with the orthodontic treatment. For example, a patient who opts to use Invisalign to remedy their misaligned bite may hear their orthodontist give them one length of time for that approach, and yet a different period of time for the use of braces on the same issue.

It is not so much the orthodontic treatment, though, as it is the specific issues in your teeth that existed before you chose the orthodontic treatment. Of course, it all begins when you pay us a visit to determine what sort of treatments will address the issues you or your child faces. We will usually make several suggestions, explaining the most effective options for your needs and goals.

Keep in mind that we are doing an orthodontic treatment and not a cosmetic one. We are addressing your bite, the full alignment of your upper and lower teeth, and not just creating the illusion of a good bite. When you hear some dental experts saying they can correct a smile in one or two visits, it is not actual orthodontic treatment but an alternative.

Our team offers only full treatments, and in most cases, this cannot be done quickly (such as a few short weeks or months). If we are to give you a rough estimate of what it takes to do orthodontic treatment, we would start with the least severe cases and then move onward from there.

As an example, a patient with a good bite, and only mild crowding and misalignment may need only a year for treatment. If crowding is moderate, and the bite not as good, the treatment may last up to 18 months. Should there be more severe issues, and the need for removal of adult teeth, care is going to extend into 24 months – or more. Truly severe issues tend to face a timeline of roughly 30 months or more.
