In the world of orthodontics, it is necessary to know how to properly care for the appliances you are wearing. At Kulkarni & Fitz Orthodontics, we emphasize patient education and want to help those who are using the Invisalign system to understand the very best ways to clean Invisalign trays.
As your preferred orthodontist in Springboro, OH, we will have already explained the proper ways to wear your clear aligners; taking them to eat and drink anything but water and to perform regular oral hygiene. However, you may have been so focused on this part to remember the best way to clean Invisalign trays. Because doing this part wrong can make the trays easily detectable to the eye or allow bacteria to build up and give you very bad breath, we want to walk you through the process here.
Upon waking, remove your clear aligners and clean them after cleaning your teeth and gums. Soaking them each day, and particularly in the morning, is a good idea. We suggest a denture cleaner or the special Invisalign cleaner. Let them soak and then gently clean with a toothbrush used only on the trays.
Whenever you remove them, you must always rinse them to ensure that saliva and bacteria do not build up in the trays. A good tip is to put a dab of antibacterial soap (unscented and uncolored) into the trays and rinse them completely or use your soft toothbrush (reserved only for the trays) to clean them as soon as you remove them from your mouth.
Do oral hygiene each time you remove them
It is a good idea to make a habit of brushing, flossing and rinsing the mouth before you put the aligners back in. Never leave the trays out in the air for long as this exposes them to bacteria.
Don’t use toothpaste on aligners
Rather than using toothpaste, you must only use appropriate treatments that cannot discolor or scratch the trays.
Invest in a case
One of the smartest moves you can make in order to maintain and properly clean Invisalign trays is to use a case that protects them whenever they are out of your mouth.
As your orthodontist, we hope you are able to enjoy the results that Invisalign provides. We know that they are superior to metal or clear braces for their ease of use, and whether you are using them as a form of cosmetic dentistry or to support better oral health, one of the most important steps is to clean Invisalign trays properly.
